Generators — questions we get asked
What size generator do I need?
It depends on whether you want the whole house or just essentials. A well pump, furnace blower, refrigeration and some lighting is a much smaller unit than a house with electric range, dryer and central air all running. We do the load analysis and give you the honest number, which is often smaller than you were quoted elsewhere.
What is the difference between automatic and manual?
An automatic transfer switch senses the outage, starts the generator and switches over in seconds with nobody home. A manual switch needs someone to go out, start a portable unit and throw the switch. Automatic costs more up front and is worth it if you travel, farm, or have anyone medically dependent on power.
Can I just backfeed my panel with a portable generator?
No. A double-male cord energizes the utility line outside your house and can electrocute a lineman working to restore your power. It is illegal and we will not install for it. A proper inlet and interlock kit costs surprisingly little and is safe.
Does the generator need servicing?
Yes. A standby unit should be exercised and serviced annually — oil, filters, battery and a load test. A generator that has not run in three years is not a backup plan. We offer a maintenance schedule.
